# The Chesapeake Bay Retriever as a gun dog

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a Maryland water retriever bred to work in rough, icy water and heavy chop. Chessies are strong-willed, protective dogs, so training that is fair, consistent and early tends to produce a dependable working partner.

## Chesapeake Bay Retriever at a glance

- **Origin:** Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, 19th century AKC breed standard

- **AKC group:** Sporting AKC

- **Typical weight:** 55-80 lbs AKC breed standard

- **Hunting style:** Retriever (waterfowl) AKC

Chesapeake owners get a dog with a lot of character. Here is where the breed came from, how that shapes its training, and what to plan before you start.

## A breed built for hard water

The AKC traces the breed to the Chesapeake Bay, where hunters needed a dog that could retrieve ducks all day in cold, rough water. The coat is short, thick and wavy with an oily undercoat that sheds water. The breed standard describes colors that blend with marsh, sedge and deadgrass.

For California, the same traits suit cold mornings in the Delta and Suisun Marsh, where tidal water and tules reward a dog that does not quit.

## Character first, then commands

Chessies are known as independent, loyal and willing to protect their family. They often form a deep bond with one handler. A young dog usually benefits from early socialization, plenty of exposure to people and places, and clear, even-handed rules.

Handlers sometimes find that a Chesapeake tests boundaries through adolescence. Consistency matters more than force. Richard's stated approach is balance, building the dog's hunting desire while teaching the team player attitude, and that suits a dog with this much mind of its own.

## How a Chesapeake is usually started

Pressure is added carefully and in stages, in an order similar to any retriever. What differs is the time and patience, because a strong-minded dog needs the rules to be the same from the first week. Learn more in [force fetch explained](https://royalgundogs.com/guides/force-fetch-explained/).

- Socialize widely and begin basic manners: sit, come, kennel
- Introduce water gradually, then ducks
- Build obedience, force fetch and delivery to hand
- Run marks that grow in distance and difficulty
- Add blind retrieves and handling for the finished hunting dog

## Getting ready for the season

A Chesapeake that will hunt cold water should be conditioned before opening day. Short swims, longer marks and a few practice sessions in the weeks before the opener build stamina and confidence. Read [getting ready for the waterfowl opener](https://royalgundogs.com/guides/ready-for-the-waterfowl-opener/) and the [off-season training calendar](https://royalgundogs.com/guides/off-season-training-calendar/) for a plan that works for any retriever, including a Chessie.

## Programs that match a Chesapeake

A young Chesapeake can start with [Puppy Camp](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/puppy-camp/) at 5 to 7 months. The [Basic Waterfowl Program](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/basic-waterfowl/) then builds obedience, force fetch and e-collar conditioning, and the [Advanced Waterfowl Program](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/advanced-waterfowl/) adds steadiness in the blind, hand signals and cold blinds. If your Chessie lives far from Rio Vista, [board-and-train](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/board-and-train/) lets the training happen at Hastings Island while you plan the season.

## Chesapeake Bay Retriever questions

The AKC describes a loyal, protective companion. Early socialization is important.

### Can a Chesapeake run hunt tests?

Yes, in AKC retriever hunt tests. Read [AKC vs HRC hunt tests](https://royalgundogs.com/hunt-tests/akc-vs-hrc/).
