Confirm dates on AKC Event Search. ## Training for tests and for hunting A Sonoma County owner may want both a hunt test dog and a duck dog. Richard's philosophy is balance, encouraging the hunting drive and desire in the dog along with the team-player attitude needed for an exceptional hunting partner or competitive team. The [Basic Waterfowl Program](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/basic-waterfowl/) and [Advanced Waterfowl Program](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/advanced-waterfowl/) pages explain how that fits. ## Before the first call Have a few things ready: your dog's breed and age, whether it has had any obedience work, and what you hunt. Richard will talk through where to start, whether that is early foundation work or something more advanced. The [guide to choosing a gun dog trainer](https://royalgundogs.com/guides/choosing-a-gun-dog-trainer/) lists questions worth asking any trainer, including Richard. California does not license dog trainers (ABC7, April 13, 2023), so your own questions matter. ## How the stay works In [board-and-train](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/board-and-train/), the dog stays with Richard while the work happens at Hastings Island. Ask about [handler lessons](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/lessons/) too; the owner side of training is what keeps the dog sharp after pick-up. The [owner-handler training FAQ](https://royalgundogs.com/faq/owner-handler-training/) answers common questions about learning to run your own dog. ### Sources (3) - Bird Dog & Retriever News : [bdarn.com/ca/trialtests/](https://www.bdarn.com/ca/trialtests/) (checked October 27, 2026) - Hastings Island Hunting Preserve : [hihp.com/royal-gun-dogs-dog-training/](https://hihp.com/royal-gun-dogs-dog-training/) (checked October 27, 2026) - American Kennel Club : [akc.org/sports/retrievers/hunting-tests/](https://www.akc.org/sports/retrievers/hunting-tests/) (checked October 27, 2026) ### Where Richard trains Hastings Island Hunting Preserve, 7758 Hastings Island Rd, near Rio Vista in Solano County.
