Richard Gebhart trains gun dogs at Hastings Island Hunting Preserve, and dogs come to him from all over California for board-and-train. ## From Sonora to Hastings Island - **Drive to Rio Vista:** about 2.2 hours 94 miles, OpenStreetMap routing, no traffic - **County:** Tuolumne US Census Bureau - **Population:** 4,919 ACS 5-year 2024 - **Median age:** 42.1 ACS 5-year 2024 Drive estimate from road routing between town centers (no traffic), pulled October 2026. Census figures: American Community Survey 5-year estimates. Sonora, the Tuolumne County seat, has 4,919 residents and a median age of 42.1 (Census ACS 5-year 2024). It is a Gold Country town in the Sierra foothills, with a long road west to the Delta. ## Down from the foothills The route covers about 94 miles in about 2.2 hours. That is a long day each way, so treat a drop-off as its own trip. Estimates use OpenStreetMap routing and no traffic. Google lists the hours as 8 AM to 2 PM Monday and Wednesday through Sunday, closed Tuesday. Call Richard about drop-off and pick-up, and ask what he recommends from the Sierra side. ## Trials at Jamestown The German Wirehaired Pointer Club of Northern California lists pointing-breed field trials at Kistler Ranch in Jamestown on the California calendar (bdarn.com, fetched October 27, 2026). Jamestown is in Tuolumne County too, which puts a pointing-dog event in your own county. A trial is a good place to talk with owners of wirehaired pointers and other versatile breeds. The [German Wirehaired Pointer page](https://royalgundogs.com/breeds/german-wirehaired-pointer/) describes the breed, and the [California hunt test calendar page](https://royalgundogs.com/hunt-tests/california-calendar/) shows other clubs and venues. Dates change each year, so confirm them on AKC Event Search. ## Versatile dogs and what they need A versatile breed points, tracks and retrieves, so the training covers more than one skill. Richard works with retrievers and, since 2013, pointers and other upland breeds. For a retriever, his [Basic Waterfowl Program](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/basic-waterfowl/) builds the foundation and the [Advanced Waterfowl Program](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/advanced-waterfowl/) takes a dog further; for the pointing side, there is the [Formal Gun Dog Training](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/formal-gun-dog-training/). ## Before you drive - Call to confirm Richard's hours and the day that works for drop-off. - Bring the dog's vaccination records, as covered in the [health FAQ](https://royalgundogs.com/faq/vaccinations-and-health/). - Ask what to pack using the [what to bring FAQ](https://royalgundogs.com/faq/what-to-bring/). - Plan the return trip so the dog rides comfortably for a long drive home. ## Making the long drive count With [board-and-train](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/board-and-train/), the dog stays with Richard during training so you do not make the run weekly. Ask about [handler lessons](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/lessons/) at pick-up, which helps you learn the dog's cues before you drive home. Because Richard sets the plan himself, the best next step is a phone call about your dog, your birds and the season you have in mind. ### Sources (3) - Bird Dog & Retriever News : [bdarn.com/ca/trialtests/](https://www.bdarn.com/ca/trialtests/) (checked October 27, 2026) - Hastings Island Hunting Preserve : [hihp.com/royal-gun-dogs-dog-training/](https://hihp.com/royal-gun-dogs-dog-training/) (checked October 27, 2026) - American Kennel Club : [akc.org/sports/pointing-breeds/hunt-tests/](https://www.akc.org/sports/pointing-breeds/hunt-tests/) (checked October 27, 2026) ### Where Richard trains Hastings Island Hunting Preserve, 7758 Hastings Island Rd, near Rio Vista in Solano County.
