# Blind retrieve

On a blind retrieve the handler knows where the bird is and the dog does not. The dog runs on a line and takes directions by whistle and hand signals until it finds the bird.

Marks reward a dog's memory. Blinds reward its trust in the handler. Together they cover most of what a hunting retriever faces.

## Why hunters need it

A bird that falls behind a levee or in tall tules is a blind for the dog. Without blind training, the dog hunts around and may leave birds in the field. With it, the dog runs a straight line, stops on a whistle and takes a [cast](https://royalgundogs.com/glossary/cast/) left, right or back.

## How it is taught

Trainers build the skill from short, straight lines to long ones with obstacles, water and changes of cover. Handling, line manners and the whistle all feed it. The guide to [marks and blind retrieves](https://royalgundogs.com/guides/marks-and-blind-retrieves/) gives the full picture.

## In hunt tests

The AKC says Senior tests have relatively simple blind retrieves on land and water, and Master tests have demanding blinds, including a double blind. Junior tests use marked retrieves only. Compare [Master Hunter](https://royalgundogs.com/hunt-tests/akc-master-hunter/) for the hardest version.

### Is a blind harder than a mark?

They test different things. A blind tests control and trust in the handler.
