# Double

In a double, the dog watches two birds fall and then retrieves both, one at a time. It tests memory and decision-making, since the dog must remember both and the handler picks the order.

Ducks rarely fall one at a time. A flock overhead or two hunters shooting means a double, so retrievers need to handle more than a single fall.

## How it works

The handler sends the dog for one bird, often the last to fall, and then the other. Trainers call the first one the go-bird. A sloppy dog goes for the nearest or favorite bird, so training teaches the dog to wait for its direction. Doubles build on single [marks](https://royalgundogs.com/glossary/mark/).

## Why it matters in the field

Delta ducks and geese often drop two at once. A dog that tracks both falls saves birds and time. The guide on [marks and blind retrieves](https://royalgundogs.com/guides/marks-and-blind-retrieves/) explains how trainers build from singles to multiples.

## In hunt tests

According to the AKC, Senior tests use double marked retrieves, and Master tests use multiple marks. Junior tests use singles. See [Senior Hunter](https://royalgundogs.com/hunt-tests/akc-senior-hunter/) for what the level looks like. A double blind, a related term, appears at Master.
