# Force fetch

Force fetch turns retrieving from a game the dog likes into a job the dog does on command. It is the step that makes a retriever reliable on a cold, hard retrieve at the end of a long day.

Many dogs love to retrieve a bird they enjoy and quit on one they do not. Force fetch, sometimes called force breaking, builds the habit that the dog picks up what it is told to pick up.

## What it teaches

The dog learns three things in order: open its mouth and take the object, hold it, and deliver it when asked. Trainers build it with a collar or ear pinch and release, then pair it with the [hold](https://royalgundogs.com/glossary/hold-conditioning/) and [delivery](https://royalgundogs.com/glossary/delivery-to-hand/) work.

Done well, it relies on clear cues and repetition rather than force on the dog. The guide to [force fetch explained](https://royalgundogs.com/guides/force-fetch-explained/) covers the stages and the usual questions.

## Why it matters in California

Waterfowl hunting often means a cripple in heavy cover or a long swim in cold water. A dog that has been force fetched is more likely to complete a retrieve it finds unpleasant. Upland hunters value the same reliability on a runner in thick brush.

## Where it shows in tests

AKC hunt tests do not score force fetch by name. Judges score marking, style, perseverance and trainability, and the AKC lists learned skills such as control, response and delivery. A dog with solid force fetch shows it in those categories, especially perseverance on a hard bird.
