# Steadiness

A steady dog holds its position while birds fly, guns fire and other dogs work. It leaves only when the handler sends it.

Steadiness is the difference between a dog that is exciting and a dog that is safe and productive in a blind. It also keeps shots clear and the day pleasant for everyone near you.

## Steady to the shot

In the field, a steady retriever sits through the flush, the shot and the fall, then waits for its name or a cue. A dog that breaks may flare birds, tangle lines or run through another dog's retrieve.

The guide on [steady to shot](https://royalgundogs.com/guides/steady-to-shot/) explains how trainers build it. Pointing breeds have their own version, holding a point until the hunter steps in.

## Why it matters for California hunters

Duck blinds and layout boats in the Delta put dogs and hunters close together. A dog that sits quietly is easier to manage in a [duck blind](https://royalgundogs.com/guides/calm-dog-in-the-duck-blind/) and safer around the gun.

## In hunt tests

Steadiness is scored as part of trainability. Ducks Unlimited notes it is compulsory at the Senior and Master levels, while at Junior a handler may physically restrain the dog before sending it. See [Senior Hunter](https://royalgundogs.com/hunt-tests/akc-senior-hunter/) for the level where it becomes required.
