# Retriever training timeline: puppy to hunt-ready

A retriever is built in order: home manners and play retrieves, formal basics, birds and gun work, then marks, blinds and steadiness, then seasons of experience. Published timelines put the whole road at about two years, and each dog sets its own pace.

Key points

- Stage 1: home foundation and play retrieves
- Stage 2: formal basics and delivery to hand
- Stage 3: birds, water and gun introduction
- Stage 4: marks, blinds and steadiness, then experience

This guide lays the stages end to end so you can see where your dog is. Ages are approximate and drawn from a published kennel timeline, not a rule. A stage ends when the dog performs it reliably in new places, not when the calendar says so. The AKC hunting test levels at the end give you a ladder to measure against.

## Stage 1: foundation at home

From eight to twelve weeks the work is short retrieve games, a regular routine, a crate and early obedience such as name recognition and basic recall, according to Wild Acre Kennels. Socialization runs alongside, with vet-approved exposure to new people and places once vaccinations allow. See [when to start a hunting puppy](https://royalgundogs.com/guides/when-to-start-a-hunting-puppy/) for this stage in detail.

## Stage 2: formal basics

The dog learns sit, here, heel and stay, and a reliable retrieve and delivery to hand. This is the heart of the Rex Carr approach to retriever basics that Richard Gebhart learned under Billy Sargenti: each piece is taught in order and made dependable before the next is added. The [Basic Waterfowl Program](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/basic-waterfowl/) follows that path. Obedience at this stage includes holding still while other things happen, which is what makes steadiness possible later.

## Stage 3: birds, water and guns

Around five months, per the Wild Acre timeline, the dog meets dead birds, hears distant quiet gun sounds and gets introduced to water if it needs it. The aim is a happy dog. A dog that links bird, water and noise with good things is ready for harder work; one that does not needs the step repeated more slowly.

## Stage 4: marks, blinds and steadiness

From about eight months to a year, the same timeline schedules recall under distraction, marking fallen birds, blind retrieves, steadiness and hand signals, with live birds and varied terrain added carefully. Read [marks and blind retrieves explained](https://royalgundogs.com/guides/marks-and-blind-retrieves/) and [steady to shot](https://royalgundogs.com/guides/steady-to-shot/) for how these are taught.

## Stage 5: seasons and advanced work

Advanced work such as multiple-bird marking, long blinds, honoring and handling at distance begins after intermediate training and at least one hunting season, according to Wild Acre. Refresher work and new challenges continue for life. The whole puppy-to-hunter process, the page says, takes about two years.

## Using the timeline

Print the stages and mark where your dog stands. If it is strong in marks but loose on delivery, go back one stage for that skill, not for the whole dog. A trainer can tell you which stage is the weak link, and a handler lesson can show you how to work on it at home between visits.

## Signposts: the AKC hunt test levels

The AKC retriever hunting tests are Junior, Senior and Master, and the AKC says beginners and dogs should start at Junior, which requires four retrieves, two from land and two from water, up to 100 yards each. Ducks Unlimited notes that dogs are judged against a standard rather than each other, and that steadiness at the line is effectively required at Senior and Master. Richard is active in the AKC retriever hunt test community, so entering a test is a natural checkpoint. His [Basic](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/basic-waterfowl/) and [Advanced Waterfowl](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/advanced-waterfowl/) programs cover it.

## Questions owners ask

[All questions](https://royalgundogs.com/faq/)

### How do I know my dog is ready for the next stage?

When it performs the current stage reliably in new places and with distractions, not only in the yard.

### Can a stage be skipped?

Rarely. Later skills lean on earlier ones, so gaps tend to show up as problems at the line or in the field.

### Do I need a hunt test to be finished?

No. Tests are a measuring stick and a goal for some teams, not a requirement for a good hunting dog.
