# When should a hunting puppy start training?

A hunting puppy starts learning the day it comes home: names, manners, people, places, then birds and water as play. Formal retriever work usually begins once the pup can focus for short sessions, and a trainer sets the timing after meeting the dog.

Key points

- Day one: routines, crate, gentle handling and social exposure
- The socialization window closes around three months, so start early and safely
- Birds, water and gun sounds come in small, happy steps
- Formal basics follow when the pup can focus; a trainer judges readiness

The question is really two questions. When does learning start, and when does formal gun dog training start? The first answer is immediately. The second depends on the pup, and nobody can honestly give it from a birth date alone. What follows covers the home months, the early field introductions and how to plan from the season you want to hunt.

## The first weeks at home

The AKC lists the early priorities for any puppy: potty training from day one, crate training, short practice at being alone, chew toys, bite inhibition, and puppy classes once the vet approves. It also says the key socialization window closes around three months, so introduce your puppy to many people, places and experiences in a positive way, and ask your vet how to do that safely before vaccinations are complete.

These habits matter to a hunting dog because a calm crate, a soft mouth and comfort with strangers are the base that later field work stands on.

## Birds, water and gun sounds

Purina's sporting dog resources say socialization and training start the day you bring a puppy home, and quote trainers who stress that a solid base of basic commands and retrieving lets a dog be refined later, even after time off.

Wild Acre Kennels, which publishes an age-by-age timeline, schedules short retrieve sessions at eight to twelve weeks, bird and gun introduction near five months, starting with dead birds and distant, quiet sounds, and water introduction as needed. Treat ages like these as a rough guide. A confident pup may be ready sooner and a sensitive one later, and the goal in this phase is for the dog to enjoy birds and water, never to fear a bang.

## When formal basics begin

Formal basics are the sit, here, heel and stay, a dependable retrieve and delivery to hand. They begin when the puppy can keep its attention for a few minutes at a time. Short sessions beat long ones, and ending on a good retrieve beats ending when the pup is tired.

Richard Gebhart learned the Rex Carr method for retriever basics under Billy Sargenti, and the principle applies at home: teach each piece in order, and let the dog succeed at each before adding the next. Read how the work continues in the [retriever training timeline](https://royalgundogs.com/guides/retriever-training-timeline/).

## Common early mistakes

Three habits cause trouble later. Long sessions wear a puppy out and turn retrieving into work. Throwing a bumper again and again can sour a dog that should end wanting more. And skipping the quiet moments, such as settling in a crate or waiting at the door, leaves a pup that cannot hold still at the line. Keep sessions short, end on a win and make calm a skill you practice on purpose.

## Plan backward from the season

Pick the date you want to hunt or run a test, then count back. California's 2026-27 duck season in the Balance of the State zone opened October 24, 2026 and runs through January 31, 2027, per the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Confirm your county on the CDFW zone map before relying on those dates. A pup born this year may spend its first season riding along and learning, which is a perfectly good start.

Richard likes to start pups in [Puppy Camp](https://royalgundogs.com/programs/puppy-camp/) at 5 to 7 months, and asks for a copy of the rabies certificate at 16 weeks to get the pup on his books. ## Questions owners ask

[All questions](https://royalgundogs.com/faq/)

### Is it ever too late to start?

No. Older dogs can learn the basics too; the plan simply starts in a different place.

### Should I wait for a trainer before doing anything?

No. Routines, socialization and play retrieves at home help, and a trainer builds on them.

### When should a pup meet a gun?

Slowly, with distant quiet sounds paired with something the pup loves, and only after it is comfortable with birds. Ask Richard before you try it at home.
