The Brittany as a gun dog
The Brittany is a compact bird dog from the Brittany region of France that points upland birds and retrieves. It is smaller than most pointers, close-working and eager, which makes it a favorite of hunters on foot in quail and pheasant cover.

Brittanys are a good size for hunters who travel in small vehicles and walk long miles. Here is what the breed was developed for and how it is commonly trained.
A pointer in a small package
The AKC notes that the Brittany stands about 17.5 to 20.5 inches tall and is smaller than setters but leggier than spaniels. Many Brittanys are born with a short or no tail. The dog hunts close enough for a walking hunter to keep pace.
That compact range suits California foothill quail and public-land pheasant hunting.
High drive, soft temperament
Brittanys are energetic and sensitive. They want to work, and they are generally quick to learn when the work is fun. Their sensitivity means they can lose confidence if correction is heavy.
The usual trap is a dog with plenty of energy and not enough direction, so early structure matters.
A typical training path
Keep sessions short and finish on a win. A young Brittany can be ready to learn soon, but the early work stays gentle.
- Recall and whoa as the first control commands
- Bird work: finding, pointing and learning to hold
- Range kept at a gun-friendly distance
- Steadiness to flush and shot
- Retrieve training, which the breed often takes to quickly
Fitting a Brittany into a hunting year
Brittanys are small enough to travel anywhere and to live in the house, so training can fit into everyday life. A regular schedule of walks in cover, bird work and short obedience sessions keeps the dog sharp through the year. Read the off-season training calendar to see how a dog's year can be organized. Pick the pieces that fit your own bird season.
Where Royal Gun Dogs fits
Richard's work with pointers and other upland breeds began in 2013, and Formal Gun Dog Training is the program for a Brittany over a year old. For a puppy, Puppy Camp at 5 to 7 months is the place to begin. Handler lessons help you learn the handling side, and board-and-train works for owners anywhere in California.
If your Brittany will also retrieve ducks, ask Richard how that fits its training.
