Hunting-dog owners in the Bay Area

Bay Area hunters head east to the marshes of Solano County and the Delta, and Richard Gebhart works in that same country. Here is how long the drive takes from each side of the Bay, which wetlands the region's hunters use and which clubs are close.

From each side of the Bay

North and east: Concord is about 47 minutes, Napa and Walnut Creek about 56 minutes each, Vallejo about 53 minutes, and Fairfield about 33 minutes. Vacaville is about 44 minutes.

Across the water and down the peninsula: Oakland is about 77 minutes, San Francisco about 84 minutes, Petaluma about 84 minutes, Fremont about 95 minutes, Santa Rosa about 103 minutes and San Jose about 109 minutes. All of them fall in the day-trip tier, which here means two hours or less each way with no traffic; rush hour on Interstate 80 or the bridges changes that.

Wetlands around the Bay

Suisun Marsh is the region's big waterfowl landscape, roughly 116,000 acres in Solano County (Water Education Foundation), and Grizzly Island Wildlife Area adds about 12,900 acres, with about 7,900 open to hunting (CDFW). The Napa-Sonoma Marshes Wildlife Area, a CDFW tidal-marsh property, lies along the Napa River south of Napa.

For owners in the south Bay, CDFW says Los Banos Wildlife Area in Merced County, about 6,200 acres, offers waterfowl and pheasant hunting on limited days with a Type A pass. Details for the closest two are on our Suisun Marsh and Grizzly Island pages.

Clubs Bay Area owners join

Bay Area retriever owners will recognize the Marin Retriever Club and the Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Club, both listed with hunt tests on Solano County grounds near Suisun City. The San Francisco Bay Weimaraner Club lists a pointing-breed field trial at Little Panoche Wildlife Area, and the Vizsla Club of Northern California one at O'Neill Forebay Wildlife Area, both on the California 2026 trial and hunt test calendar (read October 27, 2026). How Bay Area owners use board-and-train

Because most of the region is within two hours, Bay Area owners can stay close to the dog's progress through handler lessons and visits, then bring the finished dog home to hunt. Dogs come to Richard from across California, and the Bay Area is the closest large group of them.
