Oakland sits on the east shore of San Francisco Bay in Alameda County, and the Delta marsh where Richard works is a little over an hour past the Carquinez Strait. For a hunting dog owner in the East Bay, that makes board-and-train a plan you can drive in one morning.

The drive from Oakland

The route is about 59 miles and about 77 minutes with no traffic. That figure comes from OpenStreetMap routing, so Bay Area commute hours can add to it. Plan the drop-off for a time outside the rush, and call Richard first so you arrive when he is at the preserve.

At that distance Oakland falls in the day-trip tier on this site: out, a short visit, and home again without an overnight.

What board-and-train means from the East Bay

Your dog stays at Hastings Island while Richard trains it, so you are not driving back and forth during the work. Richard picks the program for your dog by phone after he hears about your dog and your hunting, and program lengths and weekly rates are published.

Because the preserve is close enough, an East Bay owner can plan to come out for a handler lesson partway through. That is where you learn the commands and the timing your dog is learning, so the training carries over once the dog is home. The details of the program are on the board-and-train page.

Hunting country within reach of Oakland

Grizzly Island Wildlife Area in Solano County is about 12,900 acres, with about 7,900 acres open to hunting (CDFW). It sits next to Suisun Marsh, which is roughly 116,000 acres and the largest contiguous brackish wetland in California. Both are in Solano County with the preserve, so the ground your dog will hunt is the ground you drive toward.

Read more on the Grizzly Island page and the Suisun Marsh page. Dogs are allowed on Grizzly Island on a 10-foot leash when not hunting, which makes it a fair place to walk a dog before or after a visit.

Clubs around the Bay

Retriever people in the East Bay have several clubs that run AKC hunt tests nearby. The Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Club has held an AKC hunt test at Denverton, and the Norcal Golden Retriever Club and the Marin Retriever Club list hunt tests on property near Suisun City. Richard sometimes trains retrievers at Denverton too.

Dates change every season, so check the 2026 California calendar and AKC Event Search instead of trusting a date on any web page. Our California hunt test calendar page links to both.

Before you call

Have a few facts ready: your dog's breed and age, whether it has been around gunfire or water, and what you want it to do by next season. If you are weighing a puppy against an older dog, the started dog or puppy guide can help you think it through.
