The valley runs from the Delta edge at Lodi and Stockton to the southern end at Bakersfield, and the trip to Rio Vista changes a lot along the way. This page gives the tiers honestly, then covers the refuges, clubs and a plan for each stretch.
Three stretches of the valley
Near the Delta, Lodi is about 38 minutes, Stockton about 44 minutes, Modesto about 80 minutes and Turlock about 96 minutes. These are day-trip distances, and a handler lesson fits into a normal day.
In the middle valley the trip becomes a long drive: Merced is about 2.1 hours, Los Banos about 2.2 hours and Fresno about 3.2 hours. Visalia (about 3.9 hours), Hanford (about 3.9 hours) and Tulare (about 4.0 hours) are about four hours.
Bakersfield is about 5.1 hours (266 miles) from Rio Vista, an overnight trip each way. All figures are OpenStreetMap routing with no traffic.
Refuges and public ground
Merced County is where much of the valley's waterfowl hunting concentrates: it was the second most-named county (9.20 percent) in CDFW's 2024 Waterfowl Hunter Survey, and 13 percent of respondents named San Joaquin Valley counties overall. Los Banos Wildlife Area is about 6,200 acres of wetland (CDFW), and San Luis National Wildlife Refuge covers over 26,800 acres of wetlands, riparian woodland, native grassland and vernal pools (USFWS).
Further south, Mendota Wildlife Area in Fresno County is about 11,800 acres and sets aside designated areas for dog training outside waterfowl season, and Kern National Wildlife Refuge, 19 miles west of Delano, offers waterfowl hunting and is closed to non-hunters on Wednesdays and Saturdays from October through January (CDFW and USFWS, read October 27, 2026).
Clubs and trials in the valley
The California 2026 trial and hunt test calendar lists the Vizsla Club of Northern California at O'Neill Forebay Wildlife Area in Santa Nella, the San Francisco Bay Weimaraner Club at Little Panoche Wildlife Area in Firebaugh, the Arrowhead English Springer Spaniel Club at Kincaid Wildlife Management Area near Porterville, and the Central Coast Hunting Retriever Club of California at the CRTA Goose Lake grounds in Lost Hills. Dates change each year; verify on AKC Event Search or through the California hunt test calendar page.
Season note for the valley
CDFW lists a Southern San Joaquin Valley waterfowl zone separate from the Balance of State zone, with ducks October 24 to January 31 in both for 2026-27. Which zone covers your county is something to confirm on the CDFW zone map; our 2026-27 seasons page links the map and the regulations booklet.
Planning around the miles
From Lodi and Stockton, Rio Vista is under an hour away. For Fresno and farther south, the drive is long enough that you should call Richard about drop-off and pick-up before choosing dates, and about adding a handler lessons session at pick-up. Board-and-train is how dogs from all over California work with Richard; see board-and-train.
