AKC Master Hunter and the Master National
Master Hunter is the highest level of the AKC retriever hunting test, written MH after a dog's name. The Master National is AKC's yearly national hunting test for retrievers that qualify through Master Hunter tests, and Richard Gebhart has run and qualified at one.

- Qualified at an AKC Master National

Master Hunter tests ask a retriever to do the work of an experienced hunting dog: multiple marks, blind retrieves, long water and land setups and steady manners with other dogs working nearby. The title marks a dog that is truly finished as a hunting retriever.
What Master Hunter asks
The Master level combines everything from Junior and Senior and raises the difficulty. Tests mix marks, blinds and honoring, and judges expect smooth, willing work under pressure. The AKC Regulations and Guidelines for AKC Hunting Tests for Retrievers (amended October 2025) set the title at qualifying scores in six Master tests, or five if the dog already holds the Senior Hunter (SH) title.
Skills that carry a dog at this level:
- Multiple marks remembered and retrieved in good order
- Blind retrieves handled across land and water, including through challenges
- Honoring and calm line manners at every stage
- Drive and stamina that hold up through a full day
The Master National
The Master National is AKC's yearly national hunting test for retrievers that qualify through Master Hunter tests; like every hunt test, it is judged against a standard, not a competition between dogs. AKC's history page records the first one on September 15, 1991, in Chesapeake City, Maryland, with 94 entries and 26 dogs qualifying. The Retriever News lists the 2026 Master National as October 1 to 11, 2026, in Roseburg, Oregon.
Richard has run and qualified at an AKC Master National, as the Hastings Island Hunting Preserve page about his training states. He has not given a year or a dog, so this page leaves them out.
Why it matters to a hunter
Few owners aim for a Master National, and that is fine. The same skills that earn a Master Hunter score, such as remembering marks and taking a cast across water, are what make a duck dog useful on a cold morning in a flooded rice field. See the Advanced Waterfowl Program, with its hand-signal drills and cold blinds, for the training side.
Learning from a handler who has been there
Richard's experience runs from top-level field trial and hunt test dogs to everyday hunting dogs and home companions. For an owner aiming at the upper levels, that range helps: the same eye that reads a Master level test can also tell you when a dog simply needs more time on basics. Read more on Richard's page.
