Hunting-dog owners on the Central Coast
Rio Vista is about 2.4 hours from Santa Cruz, about 2.9 hours from Salinas and about 5.3 hours from San Luis Obispo, so the coast is a long drive north and an overnight trip south. Richard Gebhart takes dogs from all over California for board-and-train.

Coast owners hunt quail, dove and ducks well away from the marshes of the Delta, and the nearest big wetlands are inland. This page explains the distances plainly and shows how to plan a training stay from anywhere between Monterey Bay and Santa Barbara County.
Distances along the coast
The northern end is the closest. Santa Cruz is about 2.4 hours from Rio Vista, Salinas about 2.9 hours and Monterey about 3.1 hours. All three are long drives, with most of a day spent on the road in each direction.
The southern coast is an overnight trip: Paso Robles is about 4.7 hours, San Luis Obispo about 5.3 hours and Santa Maria about 5.9 hours. Routing is OpenStreetMap with no traffic, so allow more on weekends and holidays.
Where coast hunters go
Upland hunting is the draw here. CDFW's 2026-27 upland page lists quail Zone Q2 from September 26 to January 31, and Zones Q1 and Q3 from October 17 to January 31, but it gives no county list; confirm the quail zone on CDFW's map. Dove runs September 1-15 and November 14 to December 28, and chukar October 17 to January 31 (CDFW, read October 27, 2026).
For waterfowl, the large public wetlands nearest to the coast are inland in Merced County: Los Banos Wildlife Area, about 6,200 acres, and San Luis National Wildlife Refuge, over 26,800 acres (CDFW and USFWS).
Clubs with a coast connection
The Central Coast Hunting Retriever Club of California lists a retriever hunt test at the CRTA Goose Lake grounds in Lost Hills, according to the California 2026 trial and hunt test calendar (read October 27, 2026). Other clubs on that calendar run tests at Spenceville and Little Panoche, within reach of coast owners who travel. Dates change each year, so check the California hunt test calendar page and AKC Event Search.
Planning a stay from the coast
A note on distance: dogs come to Richard from all over California, and hours of driving are a normal part of board-and-train. Richard Gebhart works the same way, with dogs from all over California.
Before you pick a date, call Richard about drop-off and pick-up from the coast. Ask whether a handler lessons session at pick-up makes sense, and read how board-and-train works for the dog and for you.
