HRC hunt tests: Started, Seasoned, Finished
HRC is the Hunting Retriever Club, which runs its tests under the United Kennel Club. Its tests run in four levels, Started, Seasoned, Finished and Grand, and a dog earns titles by collecting points toward Started Hunting Retriever (SHR), Hunting Retriever (HR) and Hunting Retriever Champion (HRCH).

HRC tests are built to look like a day in the field: the handler works in a realistic setting, and the dog is judged on how well it would perform for a hunter. Many California owners try both HRC and AKC, since the two ask for related skills. Read the AKC vs HRC comparison for the differences.
The three levels and the titles
According to the UKC's 2025 HRC rulebook, the levels are Started, Seasoned, Finished and Grand, and the titles are Started Hunting Retriever (SHR), Hunting Retriever (HR), Hunting Retriever Champion (HRCH) and Grand Hunting Retriever Champion (GRHRCH). The system is points-based, so a dog builds toward each title across several tests.
How it differs from AKC
AKC hunt tests grade each dog on a score and award qualifying scores toward the Junior, Senior and Master Hunter titles. HRC uses a points system toward its titles. Each organization also has its own rules on eligible dogs, entries and conduct, so read the HRC rulebook before you enter.
HRC tests are listed on the UKC event calendar. Richard's hunt test experience is with AKC tests; ask him how HRC fits your dog.
Preparing a dog
The skills overlap with AKC work: steady marks, delivery to hand, honoring and good manners. A dog working toward Started needs the same foundation covered in the Basic Waterfowl Program, and a dog headed for Finished fits the Advanced Waterfowl Program.
Finding a test in California
Clubs that hold HRC style tests are listed on the UKC calendar, and the California calendar page points to other clubs and venues. Because dates change each season, confirm with the host club before you plan a trip, and read its premium list for entry details.
What a test day looks like
Like any hunt test weekend, an HRC event has a handlers' meeting, a running order and judges who explain each setup. Dogs retrieve birds in front of the judges, and the work is scored against the standard for that level. The test day guide covers what to pack and how a first-timer can get through the day without stress.
Watching a test as a spectator is a smart first step, and most clubs welcome it. Ask the host club before you arrive so they can tell you where to park and where to stand.
