Drive estimate from road routing between town centers (no traffic), pulled October 2026. Census figures: American Community Survey 5-year estimates.

Antioch is a Contra Costa County city of 116,477 people with a median age of 38.4 (Census ACS 5-year 2024). For a Delta duck hunter, the town is a launch point; for a dog owner, it is among the closest places to Richard's training ground.

Two questions Antioch owners ask

Is the drive worth it? Thirty minutes each way is easy enough that owners can come out for a visit and be back in time for dinner.

Will the training match my hunting? Hastings Island is a hunting preserve in the Delta, so the cover, birds and water look like what a dog meets on a Delta hunt. Read about Hastings Island for how it fits Richard's work.

The Delta as a classroom

Our Delta hunting guide describes the channels, tules and levees where retrievers do their work. A dog that handles a long blind retrieve at Hastings Island carries that experience back to the river near Antioch.

California does not license dog trainers (ABC7, April 13, 2023), so ask any trainer what they have done with dogs. Richard has trained professionally since 2002 and has run and qualified at an AKC Master National.

Planning the program

Both programs have their own pages: board-and-train and handler lessons.

  1. Call Richard and describe the dog's breed, age and what you want it to do in the field.
  2. Decide whether the dog stays for board-and-train or whether you want handler lessons alongside it.
  3. Ask about drop-off and pick-up timing; Wednesday to Saturday are his preferred drop-off days. Richard picks the program for each dog, and weekly rates are published on the board-and-train page.
  4. Book a lesson for the day you pick the dog up so you leave knowing how to run it.

Nearby clubs and tests

Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Club has held an AKC hunt test at Denverton, and Norcal Golden Retriever Club's tests have been listed on the California Retriever Training Association grounds in Suisun City. Both are on the Solano side of the water from Antioch.

The AKC Junior Hunter page explains the first level of the AKC hunt test ladder, which is where most Delta-hunting owners who enter a test begin.

Why proximity helps a first-time owner

Most first-time owners do not know how a trained dog should look. Short distances let you see Richard work a dog and ask why. That seeing is what separates a handler who can maintain training from one who loses it in a month.
