Chico is a Butte County city of 102,188 people with a median age of 31.1 (Census ACS 5-year 2024), at the heart of some of California's best duck country. This page covers the drive, the hunting near home and how to plan training from farther away.

Hunting near Chico

Upper Butte Basin Wildlife Area covers roughly 9,600 acres across Butte and Glenn counties in the Butte Sink and runs limited-day waterfowl and pheasant hunting with reservation drawings (CDFW). Oroville Wildlife Area, about 11,800 acres, offers dove, quail, pheasant and Thermalito Afterbay waterfowl.

Butte County also ranked third among counties named in CDFW's 2024 Waterfowl Hunter Survey, at 8.71 percent of respondents. The survey measures where people hunt, not where they live.

What 2.9 hours means for a dog

At about 2.9 hours each way, a round trip is nearly six hours of driving. Plan drop-off as a long day. Call Richard about drop-off, pick-up and a handler lesson at the end of training.

With board-and-train, the dog stays with Richard while the work happens, so you are not driving back and forth during the program.

Clubs north of Chico

The Sacramento Valley Retriever Club and Marin Retriever Club are listed on the 2026 California calendar at Clear Creek Sports Club in Corning, and the Lassen Retriever Club in Anderson. Check dates on the California hunt test calendar and on AKC Event Search.

Seasons to plan around

CDFW sets waterfowl seasons by zone. Confirm your county on the CDFW zone map before planning around a date; the statewide summary is on our 2026-27 seasons page.

What to ask from the north valley

The progress updates FAQ addresses the last point, and Richard answers the others directly.

  • Whether a puppy or a started dog makes more sense for a first season.
  • How Richard handles a dog that will hunt Butte Sink ducks and Oroville quail alike.
  • What a handler lesson covers, and when it fits in a long trip.
  • How to follow progress when you live nearly three hours away.

A word on training sources

Richard's own experience comes from field trial retrievers under Billy Sargenti, where he learned the Rex Carr method for Retriever Basics, and from pointers and upland breeds under Steve Klassen at Blue Ridge Kennels beginning in 2013. His profile at hihp.com carries the full background.

Tips for the long day

Call a few days ahead, leave early, and keep the dog comfortable on the road. At pick-up, ask for a short demonstration of each command, so you can repeat it exactly at home.
