The honest numbers
Eureka is about 284 miles from Rio Vista, which is about 5.9 hours with no traffic. That is most of a day on the road each direction, so a visit to Rio Vista is a real trip. The figures come from OpenStreetMap routing and do not include weather or construction on the North Coast highways.
Richard's hours on Google are 8 AM to 2 PM Monday and Wednesday through Sunday, closed Tuesday. Call first, and ask him how he would like a North Coast owner to handle drop-off and pick-up.
Waterfowl on Humboldt Bay
The Salmon Creek Unit of Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a controlled-permit waterfowl area, used Tuesdays and Saturdays from mid-to-late October to late January by daily drawing, according to the refuge's 2025-26 hunting page. Re-check the page for 2026-27 before you plan a hunt.
A drawing means hunters do not always get a spot, so a dog needs to be ready when the day comes. Marks, steady sits and clean delivery are the basics, covered in the marks and blind retrieves guide.
Why a stay makes sense from here
With six hours each way, repeated visits are not realistic. In board-and-train, the dog stays with Richard through the program, and he sets the plan by phone within each program's published length. A call about your dog is the first step.
Ask whether handler lessons can be arranged at pick-up. The dog's training only carries over if you can give the same commands in a Humboldt blind.
Finding events from the North Coast
Hunt tests and trials are listed by the clubs that hold them. The California hunt test calendar page explains where to look, and AKC Event Search has current dates for any club.
Pieces to settle before you call
- Breed and age of the dog
- Whether you hunt the bay, the valley, or both
- The season you are aiming for
- How you want to handle the hand-off
