Delivery to hand

A dog that delivers to hand returns directly, sits in front and releases the bird when asked. It keeps the bird intact and ready to use.

The retrieve is not over when the dog picks up the bird. Delivery is the last and most visible step, and a sloppy finish can undo a good run.

What it involves

A clean delivery means the dog comes straight back with its head up, holds the bird gently and sits close enough for the handler to take it. It rests on hold conditioning and the commands in force fetch.

Why it matters for hunters

A bird dropped at the edge of a pond can be lost, damaged or picked up by another animal. Hunters also want birds in good shape for the table. Training for delivery is part of the work in honoring, delivery and line manners.

In hunt tests

The AKC lists delivery among the learned skills judges score, with steadiness, control and response. Hunt test judges see it on every retrieve, and a dog that drops or runs off with a bird loses points in trainability. Look at Junior Hunter for where it first counts.
