E-collar conditioning
E-collar conditioning teaches a dog that a low-level collar signal is a cue it already understands. Trainers use it so the dog responds at distance, in noise and around birds.

An e-collar only works well when the dog already knows the commands it reinforces. Conditioning is the careful introduction that makes the tool a clear form of communication, not a surprise.
How trainers use it
The dog first learns commands with leash and voice. The collar is then paired with those commands at a low level until the dog connects the signal with the cue. Trainers ask the dog to respond in more distracting settings step by step. The full process is in the guide on e-collar conditioning.
Why it matters for a hunting dog
A duck in a marsh or a pheasant in cover is far from the handler. A conditioned dog can respond to a recall or stop at 100 yards when voice alone would be lost in wind and gunfire. It supports force fetch and the handling work in the Advanced Waterfowl Program.
Rules and test settings
Check test rules and California regulations before you use any device in a hunt or test, and treat this page as general information, not legal advice. Richard explains how he conditions each dog when you call.
