Finished dog
A finished dog performs complex retrieves on command in tough conditions. It is the end of the training path, not a guarantee, and it still needs a handler who can run it.

Finished is the top label in the started-to-finished scale. Like started, it has no official definition, but hunters and trainers generally mean a dog that needs little more than practice.
What sets it apart
A finished dog handles multiple marks, long blinds with casts and honoring. It stays steady through shots and delivers to hand every time. The AKC describes Master tests as made for the truly finished and experienced hunting companion, where full refinement is expected.
Why handlers still matter
A finished dog trained for a professional may lose sharpness for a new owner who gives different cues. Handler lessons, such as Richard's handler lessons, help the owner keep the dog sharp. Richard's Advanced Waterfowl Program page lists what that work covers.
Finished and hunt tests
The AKC Master Hunter title is a common benchmark for a finished dog. Read Master Hunter for the test elements. Richard has run and qualified at an AKC Master National.

Meet RichardIs a finished dog the same as a Master Hunter?
Not always. Many hunters finish dogs that never run tests.
Does a finished dog need more training?
It needs practice, like any athlete.
